Žasliai

Because of the abundance of lakes, Žasliai was called ‘Little Trakai’ during the interwar period. And there is more: ‘žaslinkos’, the tax tricks, and the railway through the cemetery.

In the central square of Žasliai, a fragment of an authentic cobblestone pavement laid in 1931 is still preserved. The final scenes of the film Tadas Blinda by director Balys Bratkauskas were filmed here. The oldest wooden building in Žasliai is a pharmacy. It is said that during a fire in the early 20th century, when as much as two-thirds of the town burnt down, the first thing that people rushed to save was the pharmacy. The former municipal building, which housed the police station and the municipal office. After the war, the building was occupied by the NKVD, and in 1946 it became a school. A spectacular house where the famous teacher Ona Lisauskaitė lived during the interwar period.

People who came to the Žasliai market would rush to buy gifts for their children, called ‘žaslinkos’.

There were no ready-made garments then, and a piece of fabric cost about 70 litas. An ordinary worker earned 100 litas a month, while a teacher earned 3 or 4 times more.

In the old days, the richest people used to live near the central square and the poor used to live near the lakes. Now it is the other way around.
