Polish territory in the interwar period. Former narrow-gauge railway station (currently, bus station). The colony of civil servants’ apartments (arch. V. K. Henneberg) of “ethnic” Zakopane style. Voivodeship Administration Chamber – Neo-Baroque. Voivode’s house (arch. Jerszy Beil) – still in 2019, important guests, including the President of Poland, were welcomed there. City hospital (library). Belorusian gymnasium (the 1st Secondary School). District Court (Lyceum of Agriculture). Adam Mickiewicz’s Mound.
You will hear stories about the common history of Lithuania and Belarus, the significance of Novogrudok for the history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, a guardian of Lithuania, St Casimir. You will hear about White and Black Ruthenia. You will learn about the gymnasium graduate and director Boris Kit – later researcher of US space systems. He used to say of the Belorusian language that “It’s not a language but a song”. You will hear about the Jewish ghetto, about Jewish writer and linguist Alexander Harkavey who was born in Novgorod. You will learn about the Belarus national flag (white-red-white) designed by the architect Klawdziy Duzh-Dushewski and which was the flag of independent Belarus in 1990–1994. Local historian Vladimir Sodovsky (orig. Уладзімір Садоўскі): “It would be great if streets were named after the heroes of Belarus history”.
