In the interwar period, the Kazlų rūda - Šeštokai railway line was built and an early modern railway station was opened. First sugar factory in Lithuania. Sugar beet cultivation is one of the achievements of the Vailokaitis brothers, who brought seeds from abroad and set up a beet research laboratory. The press of that time writing about Marijampolė Hospital stated that it was one of the largest and most modern hospitals in Lithuania. A night there cost from 4 to 15 litas. The parish house of St Michael the Archangel in Marijampolė; currently it is the Marijampolė Drama Theatre. The home of the Vilkaviškis Diocese Priests’ Society, where elderly clergy used to spend their days. Vytautas Landsbergis-Žemkalnis, who at the time had just returned from his studies in Italy, designed the building. During the Soviet era, it was the headquarters of the NKVD.

This city garden is interesting because of its representation of Sudovian frugality. When electricity was being installed here, people came up with an idea that there was no need to put up electricity poles because there were trees already and all of the wires could be run from tree to tree.
