Joniškis

The most direct road to Riga, special fired bricks, a stopped watch and a silent cinema.

A complex of two synagogues: ‘the white’ and ‘the red’ one. People’s Bank (currently, J. Avižius Public Library). Former pharmacy (currently, the bank). Aušra Gymnasium. Joniškis Primary School. Retirement Home of Society of St Vincent de Paul.
The Hansa trail from Riga to Kaliningrad went through Joniškis, later – it went from Saint Petersburg to Europe. There was a Monument to the Decade of Lithuanian Independence designed by V. Dubeneckis in Joniškis and famous Hollywood actor Laurence Harvey spent his childhood in Joniškis too. 400 years ago, Joniškis was known for some kind of democracy – all the matters were discussed during the meeting of town people as they considered and decided everything by themselves. In the town, we will be accompanied by the young Joniškis musicians, the Cultural Centre’s folklore ensemble Kupars.

What people say
from the eye and from the heart
Dr Kastytis Antanaitis,
VMU historian
This region was in the Riga zone of economic influence – flax was grown here and bought-in in Riga and although its quality was not special, the demand for it was high in Europe at that time.
Jolita Kančienė,
architectural historian
Unplastered facades of yellow bricks were a feature of the Joniškis region which is now diligently destroyed...
Regina Lepnickienė,
heritage specialist
If you drove straight 90 km, you would get to Riga, if 40 km – to Jelgava or Šiauliai. Once Joniškis was greater than Šiauliai.
