Gdynia

A window to the world of interwar Poland.

Bank employees’ apartment building (arch. Stanisław Ziołowski) - the largest and most modern building in Poland at the time. Port of Gdynia (eng. Tadeusz Wenda) - the largest port on the Baltic Sea between the wars. Marine Passenger Terminal (arch. Dyckerhoff & Widmann) - where emigrants sailed on transatlantic ships. Port warehouse No 5 (eng. Konstantyn Jaskulski).
In Gdynia, there is Kaunas street, followed by Varėna, Druskininkai, and Klaipėda, and on the other side, Algirdas, Vytautas and Gražina streets. We will hear that the history of Gdynia began with the Carthusian monastery. One of the first underground garages in Poland was built next to the Bank employees’ apartment building. The glass-and-reinforced concrete dome of the Gdynia Port Passenger Terminal is just 6 cm thick. At that time, lift- operators in red jackets with gold buttons in the luxurious houses greeted people. The vertical (riser) of the modern staircase was called the “thermometer”. We will visit a hideaway-museum created by the inhabitants themselves.

According to the press at the time, architects in Gdynia “built ships on land out of bricks and cement”.

Market Hall (arch. Stefan Reychman) reminds of a church. The cubist villa Łosiuwka (arch. Zbigniew Kupiec). The Swedish Consulate and the evangelical church (arch. Stanisław Płoski). Israel Reich and Wolf Birnbaum House (arch. Edward Fuhrschmied) - with orangeries in the corner windows. The joke is that in Gdynia, the staircase must be not steep and wide to carry a piano in and a coffin out. Gdynia city was started to be built in 1925, with modernist architecture. We will get to know the Kamienna Góra district and its luxurious villas. You will visit Marianna Doliwa-Dobrowolska, whose husband was the nephew of the famous Polish politician E. Kwiatkowski, known as the “creator of Gdynia”. You will learn where Kwiatkowski’s monument was built and how Pope John Paul II honoured him. We will walk through the spaces of the ship-like house. According to tour guide Robert Chrzanowski, Gdynia is known as The White City of Modernism.
What people say
from the eye and from the heart
Dr Kąstytis Antanaitis,
historian
Sailors, especially Swedes and Greeks, gave Gdynia a certain charm. Even sightseeing tours used to come from Warsaw to see the sailors - not on ships, but in bars.
Maria Piradoff-Link,
contemporary
About the Bank employees’ house - a representative staircase called by the architects “soul”. We preserve our building, we don’t change anything, only renovate.
Dr Tomasz Błaszczak,
historian
Our goal is to find “Kaunas” in Gdynia. And here, in Gdynia, in 1920, the marriage between Poland and the sea took place.
