During the Soviet era, when foreign tourists would be taken from Vilnius to Kaunas on the motorway, Žiežmariai were shown to them through the bus window. Therefore, two-storey houses were specially built there to convince tourists that everybody was very wealthy, it was like entire Potemkin villages.
