Prienai

The barracks of Prienai comprise one of nine modern military towns built between the wars. The barracks met all the hygiene requirements of the time, including plumbing, central heating and foot-washing facilities. Today, the heritage site is in ruins. Kęstutis Monument. In 1937, on the initiative of the soldiers and at their expense, a concrete monument to the Grand Duke of Lithuania, the patron of the regiment, was erected in the barracks area. It is the only such monument in Lithuania. Restored on 16 February 1990, the Kęstutis Monument stands by the bridge over the Nemunas, as if guarding the city.

The fate of the Kęstutis Monument is a sad one, as it was demolished by the Soviet army. According to contemporaries, the biggest tractor arrived and the monument was toppled, smashed to pieces and buried.

The barracks in Prienai are distinguished by their Art Deco decoration. This is certainly a unique case, and I have never seen buildings with this kind of decoration anywhere else.

employee of the Museum of Prienai Region
If all roads lead to Rome, I say that all roads lead through Prienai. The town was famous for the Lazaras Golbergas’ brewery, the Pale Ale of which was known throughout Europe.
